Senior Electrical Engineer – Power Generation

Multiple Locations Available:

Kansas City, MO | Ann Arbor, MI | Raleigh, NC

Employment Type: Full-Time (Contract to Hire Possible)

(Hybrid – 3 days in the office, preferably Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday)

Compensation: $75 - $85/hr

Position Overview

We seek an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer in power generation to support multiple projects related to contract compliance and plant performance for simple cycle gas power plants. This role involves technical oversight of electrical designs, including reviewing and redlining specifications, drawings, and calculations to ensure project and regulatory requirements compliance.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in power generation, strong technical knowledge in electrical systems design and analysis, and a Professional Engineer (PE) license.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support multiple power generation projects, ensuring compliance with specific contract and plant requirements.
  • Review and redline engineering drawings, calculations, and technical specifications to ensure accuracy and regulatory compliance.
  • Evaluate electrical system designs for simple cycle gas power plants, ensuring adherence to industry standards and plant specifications.
  • Provide technical oversight for power generation electrical systems, including substations, transformers, switchgear, relays, and protective systems.
  • Conduct engineering analysis and troubleshooting of power systems, identifying and resolving design or performance issues.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical, civil, and project management personnel, to support integrated power plant projects.
  • Ensure all designs and project deliverables meet NERC, NEC, IEEE, and applicable power generation standards.
  • Support regulatory and contract compliance reviews related to power plant electrical infrastructure.
  • Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and assist in knowledge transfer within the team.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license (REQUIRED).
  • Minimum of 7+ years of experience in power generation, focusing on simple cycle gas power plants.
  • Strong expertise in electrical system design, analysis, and compliance for power generation facilities.
  • Hands-on experience with specifications, drawings, and calculations review & redlining.
  • Knowledge of NERC, NEC, IEEE, and applicable industry regulations for power generation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to assess design and operational challenges.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with combined cycle power plants or other thermal generation facilities.
  • Proficiency in power system modeling software such as ETAP, SKM PowerTools, or similar.
  • Experience conducting arc flash studies, relay coordination, and load flow analysis.
  • Familiarity with SCADA, PLCs, and protection relay programming.
  • Previous experience working with utilities, EPC firms, or independent power producers.

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Hybrid Work Model – 3 days in-office (Tues, Wed, Thurs preferred).
  • Travel to project sites as needed for inspections, testing, and coordination.
