Job Description

The Institution

THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT TYLER

Founded in 1971, The University of Texas at Tyler (UT Tyler) exists to serve others and its mission is to help its students, patients, and community members achieve their educational and health goals by offering a combination of excellence in higher education, research, public service, and advanced healthcare delivery. UT Tyler offers more than 80 undergraduate and graduate programs to nearly 10,000 students and consists of six colleges – College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education and Psychology, College of Engineering, School of Nursing, Soules College of Business and Ben and Maytee Fisch College of Pharmacy.

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler (UTHSCT) joined The University of Texas System (UT System) in 1977. With an expanded mission that today offers award-winning patient care in its 1,000-bed, $1 billion health system, UT Health East Texas, UTHSCT and its School of Community and Rural Health and School of Medical Biological Sciences offers degree programs in public health, health administration, and biomedical and clinical research. UTHSCT is nationally recognized and competitively funded by private foundations, non-profit organizations, the Centers for Disease Control, and the National Institutes of Health.

Effective January 2021, UT Tyler merged with UTHSCT to create a single, integrated university that will more comprehensively serve the educational, health and economic needs of East Texas. This merger created a seamless environment for students and faculty to have exceptional opportunities to learn, teach, conduct research, and deliver health care in a single, fully integrated academic and medical setting. The HSC retains its status with UT System as a health-related institution while operating as an administrative arm and instructional unit of UT Tyler known as the Health Science Center at UT Tyler (HSC).

The UT System Board of Regents recently authorized UT Tyler to begin the process of establishing a medical school and offering a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree in Tyler. The medical school aims to educate the next generation of physicians and provide specialty training, with an emphasis on rural health care, utilizing the existing residency programs at HSC as a solid foundation for the expansion of professional training and preparation. The HSC is adding 200 new residency slots to expand the pipeline of physicians who complete their training in East Texas hospitals with hopes of retaining new doctors in a region that faces an aging physician population.

THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS SYSTEM

The University of Texas System (UT System) is one of the nation’s largest systems of higher education. Encompassing 14 educational institutions, of which eight are academic universities and six are health-related institutions, a $17.9 billion budget, over $3 billion in sponsored programs, and $1.1 billion in state funding, UT System provides excellence in education, research, and healthcare for all Texans. Each year, UT institutions award more than one-third of all undergraduate degrees in Texas and almost two-thirds of all health professional degrees. With about 21,000 faculty – including Nobel laureates – and more than 83,000 health care professionals, researchers, student advisors and support staff, UT System is one of the largest employers in the state.
