Our Client

CITGO is a US-based refiner, transporter and marketer of transportation fuels, lubricants, petrochemicals, and other industrial products headquartered in Houston, Texas. The company owns three large and complex refineries in the United States and is the 5th largest refiner in the country. The company has over 3,400 employees and also owns and operates terminals, pipelines, and lubricant blending and packing plants. CITGO also has over 4,900 independently owned branded retail outlets across America.

The Role

The Paralegal, Litigation will provide advanced litigation paralegal support in connection with state and federal lawsuits, arbitrations, claims, government inquires, subpoenas and regulatory proceedings involving CITGO with roughly more than half of the docket comprised of toxic tort matters such as asbestos and/or benzene. The Paralegal, Litigation will also handle commercial cases, premises liability cases, and workers compensation cases.

The Paralegal, Litigation will report to the Managing Counsel - Litigation of CITGO

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage the intake of new cases and ensure timely responses
  • Prepare and coordinate the tender case defense to insurers and indemnitors
  • Organize, maintain and control responses to document production requests and subpoenas
  • Create and manage document databases
  • Coordinate other discovery, including depositions and interrogatory answers
  • Coordinate with outside counsel
  • Serve as a liaison with internal clients and other departments to research information needed for discovery
  • Provide assistance to Legal Department attorneys
  • Oversee Medicare reporting of settlements where applicable
  • Assist with document and electronic information requests and production in litigated matters
  • Maintain and update the case management system (TeamConnect) which tracks status of all assigned cases and provides critical information for reporting; tasks include monitoring budgets; opening new matters; updating matter status notes and various other data
  • Participate in special departmental or company-wide projects as requested, including provision of commercial paralegal services in connection with significant deals, corporate governance, and other transactional matters involving the Company

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications for the position:

  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred; equivalent alternatives may be considered, including a paralegal certificate from an institution approved by the American Bar Association, completion of college level training in paralegal studies or in a law degree program, or certification through NALA or NFPA
  • Proven experience as a paralegal in a litigation setting; experience focused on toxic tort preferred
  • Familiarity with refinery operations, OSHA/EPA regulatory frameworks, and incident documentation is highly desirable
  • Project management skills with experience in discovery processes (traditional and electronic), including willingness to independently problem solve, and aggressively pursue company information/records needed to defend or prosecute cases.
  • Experience with TeamConnect or matter management system preferred; Skills and ability to effectively use available technology resources
  • Proficient organizational skills, ability to handle multiple projects, ability to manage confidential and sensitive information; high level of attention to detail
  • Must be responsive and flexible, with the ability to quickly respond to ever changing priorities, and adapt and apply new approaches to different situations
  • Self-guided and motivated; able to take on new challenges and excel; capable of producing with minimal oversight
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact effectively across all levels of an organization both internally and externally
  • Superior work ethic and integrity
  • Experience working in an international organization with multiple different cultures
  • Fluent in speaking, writing, and reading in English
