Position : Government Affairs Field Representative

Company : Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles (AAGLA)

Location : Los Angeles, CA | Hybrid Remote

Compensation : $72,000 - $75,000, D.O.E.

Reports to : Senior Vice President, Government Affairs & External Relations

Position Status : Exempt

Term : Regular, Full-time. Some evenings are required for meetings and events.

Location : Los Angeles, California. This position works a hybrid schedule working both in-person at our headquarters currently located near Downtown, Los Angeles targeting approximately 2 days per week in office, and optional 3 days remote at home. Requires travel to meetings throughout the Greater Los Angeles Area (vehicle and valid driver's license required).

ABOUT THE POSITION : The Government Affairs Field Representative will report directly to AAGLA’s Senior Vice President, Government Affairs & External Relations and is primarily responsible for representing AAGLA members at City Council and Board of Supervisors meetings throughout AAGLA’s territory on matters related to rental housing. This position provides oral comments at City Council and Board of Supervisors meetings, participates in one-on-one meetings with elected officials and government staff, drafts advocacy materials (including alerts, one-page informational/talking points, data compilations, etc.), monitors agendas and conducts research. The Government Affairs Field Representative is someone who enjoys public speaking, building relationships, writing, and policy analysis.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBITLIES:

· Support the development and implementation of a local policy and advocacy agenda on priority issues for rental housing providers in consultation with the Senior Vice President, Government Affairs & External Relations.

· Assist in highlighting the important role that independent, mom-and-pop rental housing providers play in housing and advocate for policies that support their small, local businesses. This work will include direct outreach to individual city council members, speaking during public comment at city council and board of supervisors’ meetings and committee meetings, preparing action alerts and written updates to members.

· Participate in meetings with local elected officials during urgent issues as well as conducting regular outreach to develop and deepen relationships.

· Monitor, interpret, and summarize local legislative proposals and policies that impact rental housing providers.

· Conduct legislative research and analysis, draft factsheets, develop source materials and keep updated on new policy trends emerging in various cities.

· Maintenance of a local legislative issues tracking database, utilize online grassroots advocacy system, and maintain contact information for legislators.

· Provide administrative support for AAGLA’s political action committees, Candidates PAC and Issues PAC, including gather data on local candidates and races.

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Minimum of Bachelor's degree required with strong preference for degrees in Political Science or Journalism.

· Bilingual English / Spanish strongly preferred.

· Strong public speaking skills and keen attention to detail are required.

· 1 to 2 years of community organizing, grassroots, journalism or advocacy experience is strongly preferred. Experience working in government relations, outreach, an elected official’s office, political campaign or student government is a plus. Direct sales experience is valued. Willing to train the right candidate as this is an entry level opportunity in government affairs.

· Self-starting with desire to learn new policy issues, technology and conduct research and data analysis.

· Growth mindset and ability to receive constructive feedback.

· Excellent personal accountability and follow-through.

· Familiarity with online advocacy tools is a plus.

· Willingness and flexibility to change job requirements as needed.

· Previous experience a plus.
