Position Summary: Environmental Educators provide all programming for students and teachers during their Camp Leopold stay. Start Date: August 16th, 2025
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Lead students and chaperones through daily programs including class instruction, outdoor activities, adventure courses, meal times, clean-up, and night lessons
- Daily care and frequent handling of animal ambassadors, mainly reptiles and waterfowl
- Develop course curriculum and activities
- Prepare facilities & vehicles for upcoming trips and events
- Perform maintenance on facilities & vehicles as needed
- Maintain high standards of safety and health in all activities for campers
- Model professionalism. Serve as a positive role model to campers and staff. Strictly adhere to general camp procedures and practices including: safety, sportsmanship, appropriate behavior, following schedules and cleanliness
- Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, all-camp activities and camp functions
- Ensure that the Counselors-In-Training assigned to your cabin/area receive meaningful and relevant experiences
- Provide a positive atmosphere for campers and staff, by demonstrating enthusiasm, excitement and energy during camp activities
- Provide outstanding and consistent customer service to all camp guests
- Attend staff meetings and trainings
- Assist campers and staff in following emergency procedures (fire, evacuation, illness, injury, etc.) as needed
- The ability to have fun
- Complete all other duties as assigned by the Camp Leadership Team
Required Qualifications:
- Currently certified or willing to become certified in First Aid/CPR, Zipline, and low ropes course before camp (will be provided if needed)
- Successful participation and completion of staff training prior to beginning of camp
- Ability to observe camper behaviors, assess its appropriateness and apply appropriate management techniques, as well as enforce appropriate safety and emergency procedures to the situation
- Proven ability to deal effectively with people at all levels of responsibility; strong interpersonal skills; possess high degree of integrity
- Ability to take initiative, be flexible, use sound judgment, and work harmoniously with others
- Ability to lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities
- Proven skills in communication, organization, and human relations
- Willingness to work with diverse populations
- Possess enthusiasm, passion, and initiative for connecting youth with the outdoors
- Proven ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels of responsibility
- The ability to work nontraditional hours and in adverse weather conditions; flexibility
- The ability to professionally represent Camp Leopold and SCWA
- Possess a valid Driver's License
- Knowledge of fauna and flora of southeastern US ecosystems and management (preferred)
- Experience with: Animal keeping and handling skills, canoeing, musical skills, field research, and other outdoor skills are all a plus (preferred)
- Education and Experience:
- Possess or be working towards a bachelor's degree ○ Preferably in education, ecology, forestry, biology, wildlife, conservation, natural resources, or other related fields
- Has 1-2 years of experience working with children in an outdoor setting
- Demonstrated leadership and management skills
Physical Requirements:
- Lead and participate in recreational activities which may include running, throwing, kicking & shooting
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental weather and program threats, as well as maintaining constant supervision of campers, staff, and volunteers
- Ability to lift and/or maneuver weights of up to 35lbs
- Physical ability to respond to emergency situations and follow procedures.
- Endurance including: prolonged standing, bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching
- Requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities
- Requires daily exposure to the sun, heat, insect and animals
